The Midnight Dancers A Fairy Tale Retold Regina Doman Books

The Midnight Dancers by Regina Doman is one of her series of fairy tales retold. This one is based on one of the Grimm’s brothers lesser known tales entitled, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, which tells the story of 12 sisters who are enchanted into glamorously dancing each night away to their own detriment.

Doman's updated version is a story that, even apart from its Christian themes, is very much worth reading. Written in a clear and straight forward manner, it is a well developed, entertaining story full of intrigue.

Doman brings a very believable and modern slant to the old fashioned elements of the story and uses the secret middle-of-the-night excursions from the original fairy tale to illuminate the dangers of giving into all our temptations and rebelling against authority. The Christian message and appropriately subtle Catholic perspective were very present without ever being so overbearing that the story was compromised.

My only warning would be that there are some adult subjects in the book that surprised me. Drugs, unwanted sexual advances, underage drinking, and more all contribute to the realism and credibility of the story but would make me think twice about handing the book to a child too young to handle such themes.

The Midnight Dancers A Fairy Tale Retold Regina Doman Books Reviews

I did enjoy this very much. I didn't expect to fall for Paul's charachter but he was so sweet and loyal and humble. Rachel does not deserve him to be honest but then we all make mistakes and deserve second chances.

I still think Waking Rose is my favorite book in this series.
(This review is written by a family member.)

The Midnight Dancers is about twelve girls who are tired of being good. The girls' father, a colonel just home from action, volunteered his daughters for church work, which they hated. While organizing her bedroom, his eldest daughter, Rachel, found a secret passage down to a beach. Her sisters promised not to tell, and so often they slipped away at night.
When Paul Fester, a fellow soldier, visited, the colonel asked him to find out where the girls were going. Paul told the colonel that he wanted to make the girls tell their father themselves.
Rachel invited boys to their midnight parties. The young men brought motor boats and gave the girls rides over to an island. Then another man came over. This man, Michael, owned the island, and welcomed the visitors. Rachel thought she was falling in love with him, but when he tried assaulting her sexually, she realized he had been trapping her ever since he came. Fortunately, Paul came to the rescue. Rachel ran, got all the girls off the island, and came back to help Paul. Michael and his friends had tied Paul to a tree. When Rachel was almost done loosening the bonds, Michael came back drunk. Just then, the police came and arrested Michael.
The next morning, Rachel and Paul went to a Catholic church together.
Although this book doesn't mention Rachel and Paul's marriage, we can believe that they did get married, for at the end of the book Rachel thinks, "I'll never leave you again." (Taken from The Midnight Dancers by Regina Doman.)
I like this book because (1) it is exciting, (2) it shows how goodness is not boring, (3) it shows how important it is to keep yourself a temple of God by dressing modestly. Because of the mentioning of sexual assault, I recommend this book 13+.
I enjoyed reading this book even though I am the mother of the intended audience. My 16-year-old daughter really liked it, too. It is a well-woven tale and captures that rebellious feeling of adolescence so well. The only difficulty I had was that some of the military terms were unfamiliar to me. This retelling finally tied up an issue which I had with this fairy tale when I was a child if the soldier bonded so well with the youngest daughter, why did he marry the oldest? The age of the girls in this book made the idea that the soldier would have any romantic attachment to the youngest quite preposterous.

My daughter pointed out that some of the subject matter was too much for younger readers, and she would not recommend it to anyone under 14 years old. As I said, there is nothing inappropriate, but a couple of the scenes (one a torture scene, another the suggestion that a young man might force a young lady to do something against her will) might be too heavy for a younger girl.

Thank you, Regina Doman, for writing a book that is entirely clean and morally uplifting without being prudish or preachy!
Fantastic! Has it all mystery, action, light romance and it's Catholic. I'm on to the next book in the series... ...Thank you Regina Doman for another great story.
