The Curse Giver eBook Dora Machado

This book had an interesting plot that made me want to like it.
* A mysterious curse to be solved to save lives.
* Determined characters who showed loyalty and grit in the face of long odds.
* An interesting world, that made sense with the story.
* Characters that weren't too behind the reader in following the development of the story.

Unfortunately,
* There were supporting role "good guys" who were really hard to like. They were pretty dense about, and unwarrentedly mean to, the female lead. One of them flipped from being a total jerk to being utterly devoted to her in a manner that seemed rather rushed. It was just strange.
* The romance felt forced and unjustified, given how the male/female leads interacted. I just couldn't care about it.
* The resolution to the curse, in my opinion, was unbelievably silly, pat, and hard to believe.

I think I stopped and read another book several times before I finally skipped about 20% of this book. Then, the last several chapters made me realize that I hadn't missed anything by skipping so many before them. Too bad, it could have been a goodbook if there'd been better character development. That might have made the solution to the curse more bearable.

The Curse Giver eBook Dora Machado Reviews

I really enjoyed this story though I would have loved to see a fully realized love scene and not the snippet we are given as a teaser. Supposedly this book is like 400+ pages but it took me days to wade through which made me want to give up a few times. I mean I poured through a 750+ page Robin Hobb in two days...so not sure why our what made this a hard read it just was. I did really enjoy all the twist and turns though and will definitely read more from this author in the future though I think I'm gonna read something lighter for now just to relax after this one. Great work and I would definitely recommend if for no other reason than the world building which I found phenomenal!
This is a book that's long length is beneficial rather than harmful. So many authors feel the need to write books that go on and on in fear that the story is too short and there is not enough substance. This author, however, managed to write a lengthy novel that was enjoyable to read and wasn't all over the place and sloppy. Major props to the author for being able to achieve that. The dialogue was extremely well written, the plot completely original and intriguing, and the characters are relatable, likable, and strong. I truly had a good time reading this, even though I typically do not like fantasy/paranormal novels. I would certainly recommend this.
The Curse Giver is a fantastical tale that will capture the readers interest at the start. Bren, the cursed Lord and Lusielle, a remedy mixer fated to die by being burned at the stake, betrayed her greedy and cruel husband, is rescued by Bren, but only to use her end the curse. In order to break the curse, Bren must hunt and put to the test all women who bear the mark. Lusielle bears the mark. None of the women have survived the test, though Lusielle, a skilled and remarkable remedy mixer is a woman of uncommon resolve and strength.
There story is filled with magic and evil and an infamous curse giver.
Beautifully written, and a page turner, I couldn't put it down. I loved this novel and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
I loved this book! Ms. Machado creates a vivid world, full of twists and turns and complex, real characters that keep you hooked and wanting more. In fact, my only real issue with this book is that there is no sequel! I lenjoyed the slow-building attraction between Lusielle and Lord Brennus - a love doomed by the curse Lord Brennus bears and that Lusielle wears like a death mark. Thrown together to survive, Lusielle and Lord Brennus learn to know and respect each other - and inevitably fall in love. But no matter what they do, or how much they care, the curse is there, marking their lives and dangling their deaths in front of them.

If you enjoy epic fantasy with characters you can believe in and cheer for, this book is for you. Filled with intrigue, forbidden passion, doomed love and sizzling fight scenes, I only wish it was the first in a very long series!
Unlike a some of the other reviewers, I did not find this book too long, hard to get into, or too bogged down in the world building, the gods, and politics. I thought those aspects were well done, and elevated the book from a just fantasy romance to a fantasy book with romance as part of the plot. They were actually my favorite parts of the book. There was action and suspense; the dialogue and characters were snappy and well written. However, I do agree with another reviewer that the use of "'cause" was frequent enough to drive me a bit batty. For me the downside to this book was the reliance on what I feel are typical romance novel tropes The hero is dark and brooding and can't communicate why he is so dark and brooding, based on a curse. The bad guy(s) the heroine escapes is/are always out to abuse, rape, torture her. (Why do those always have to be the stakes in a romance novel?) And she's abducted several times in the book, which leaves the hero frantic and searching. (Although I do like that sometimes the author has our heroine get herself out of her scrapes through smarts and spunk vs just waiting for the man to come to the rescue.) And there is the trope of the search for "the One." Actually there is also "the Curse Giver," "the Chosen," "the Profit," "the Gate Keeper"...okay, I'm making some of those up, but you get the drift. Still, there was a lot to enjoy about this book, especially if you like a book that relies on some standard romance novel structures.
