The Summer Queen An Epic Novel of the Snow Queen Cycle Joan D Vinge 9780765304469 Books

The Summer Queen (The Snow Queen Cycle, #3) by Joan D. Vinge

Overall a very worthy read! Fun of twisty character driven plot, and interactions. And this book does a very good job bringing the various subplots together at the end of this cycle of books.
It is a large book, and part of that is due to the tendency of the author to get into some melodrama, soap opera style romance. While I like the added dimensionality to the various characters, there were more than a few times when I got bored of that artifact as well. Happily, those soap opera interludes are not so heavy handed, nor so numerous that I couldn't just skim a bit, then get back to the story at hand.
A good conclusion to this series, and still very relevant to this day and age.

The Summer Queen An Epic Novel of the Snow Queen Cycle Joan D Vinge 9780765304469 Books Reviews

This novel exceeded all of Vinge's other work except possibly for Dreamfall. What made this work particularly brilliant was how she transcended the temptation most sci-fi-/fantasy authors have of writing a 'happily ever after' account. Her characters are human, caught in complex situations, imperfect and flawed. The alien-esque aspect was well thought out as was the storyline.
Second read and still it amazed and entertained me endlessly! Indeed she is a very good writer. I can't believe that a film haven't been produced based on both her books the winter and the summer queens.
One of my favorite sci-fi novels. A perfect sequel to "The Snow Queen." Actually, I think this story was even better than The Snow Queen, but you should read them both. Joan D Vinge is one of my favorite authors; I wish that she could write more!
I love this book so I'm going to be bias. The complexity of the society, the social issues, the sci-fi tech fun! This is a story of a world that is used to be exploited and who reaps the benefits from that.
Summer Queen was a great sequel to the Snow Queen. With the two books being 25 years old, the stories hold up very well today. Even though the concept of Post Galactic Empire has been explored by multiple authors, these books provide a slightly different tact. The technology and motivation driving the characters makes the overarching story engaging. I will probably add these to my list of books to reread in the future.
The Snow Queen and The Summer Queen were both lent to me when I was a teenager and I absolutely loved both of them. It's definitely possible to just read and enjoy The Summer Queen (which is good, since The Snow Queen is out of print and rather hard to find these days!) but it's definitely a richer reading experience to have the pair of books. I do find the conflicts and character growth to be more engaging in The Summer Queen than in The Snow Queen and, of the two, this one was my favorite. It's a pretty wonderful piece of fantasy!
Contrary to what the text on this page would have you believe, this is not a direct sequel to The Summer queen. this is, in fact, book 3 - book 2 being "World's End", which currently has no Edition. It was frustrating to begin reading this and find out through expository material that not only was there another book, but that a major even happened in that book, an event that drives the entire plot of this one. I am disappointed in Tor They did publish all three in paper format, why skip one in digital and then attempt to hide the fact?
